Each year the Red Rocks Initiatives for Sustainable Development hosts its Cultural Festival. In September 2024 we celebrated our 12th festival with a week-long programme of activities that ranged from traditional music and dance to arts and crafts, interactive workshops to community debates. Over 3,500 people from around Rwanda and various parts of the world descended on Nyakinama – Musanze to experience Rwandan culture. This festival is just one of a number of events and activities organised by Red Rocks. Another initiative is their Eco tours of Kigali and northern Rwanda.

From September 1st to 5th, 2024, the Red Rocks Cultural Festival ignited Musanze showcasing culture, community, and conservation efforts. This year’s event celebrating its 12th anniversary, drew more than 3,500 people from across the worldto experience Rwandan traditions, and eco-friendly tourism for a week. Red Rocks Rwanda, a community-based initiative, organized the festival. It showed how the organization aims to use tourism to help locals, while harmonizing tourism, conservation, and community development.
The festival began with an eye-catching opening event that featured traditional dance shows setting the tone for a lively and engaging experience. The vibrating rhythms of drums bright outfits, and spirited dances took participants straight to the essential of Rwanda’s culture. This energetic start showed the festival’s dedication to emphasizing Rwanda’s profound cultural roots while also marking the endeavours of the last 12 years.
Local Traditions & Talent
As the days extended, participants were treated to differentactivities designed to expand their understanding of Rwandan culture and the conservation efforts being made by the local communities. From hands-on village life experiences to engaging workshops, the festival offered something for everyone.
The festival also celebrated Rwandan culinary with an array of traditional dishes. Participants enjoyed a variety of local foods prepared using traditional methods, giving them a taste of Rwandan cuisine. The banana beer brewery tour was a particularly popular attraction, where guests learned about the brewing process of this traditional beverage and sampled its typical flavours.
Local talents was a major focus of the festival. Participants had the chance to experience traditional weaving and pottery techniques. Skilled artisans demonstrated their ability, sharing their knowledge and passion with participants. The live painting sessions offered a present-day wind, with artists seizing the beauty of Rwandan sceneries and cultural scenes.
Pauline Niyonsaba, a local artisan from the Nkotsi Weaving Women Cooperative, a cooperative supported by Red Rocks Initiative stated that Red Rocks Cultural Festival is a celebration of their community and their heritage. And also an opportunity to share traditions with the world, to show how tourism can support and sustain their way of life.
Jean-Claude, is a local painter for 10 years working with Red Rocks Rwanda. Like Pauline, he confirmed that participating in the festival has been a transformative experience for his career. The chance to showcase his art to an international audience has opened new doors for him. It’s inspiring to see how art and culture can drive positive change and contribute to broader goals of conservation and community development.
In keeping with its pledge to sustainability, the festival showcased eco-friendly banana bags ‘ibihoho‘. This demonstration highlighted innovative techniques to use traditional materials in environmentally friendly ways. Furthermore, the hiking documentary experience offered a photographic journey through Rwanda’s stunning landscapes, while medicinal plant tours introduced participants to the rich knowledge of local plants and its traditional uses.
Storytelling Into the Night
The evenings at the festival were filled with magical moments of storytelling and replication. Red Rocks Twataramye hosted charismatic storytelling sessions by local elders around a bonfire, where local elders shared ancient tales and wisdommingled with the traditional music instruments playing of Inanga, drums and Iningiri. This friendly setting allowed participants to connect deeply with Rwandan cultural traditions and gain insights into the values and beliefs of the local communities.
Cultural debate sessions added another level of commitment, providing a platform for participants to discuss important topics related to heritage, conservation, and community development. These debates raised meaningful dialogue and encouraged participant to explore different perspectives on key issues.
This year’s festival was made possible through the support of various allies, with a notable partnership with Virunga Ecotour. This collaboration embodied the shared vision of uplifting communities through community-based tourism and stressed the importance of working together to achieve sustainable development goals.
At the festival conclusion, the logic of celebration and achievement was profound. The striking closing ceremony marked the end of a memorable week, filled with cultural exploration, community empowerment, and conservation awareness. The festival not only highlighted Rwanda’s amusing cultural heritage but also strengthened the importance of integrating tourism with community growth and environmental stewardship.
The triumph of the Red Rocks Cultural Festival 2024 serves as a reminder of the influence of cultural carousing to get-up-and-goon positive change and inspire future generations. By celebrating and preserving Rwandan culture, the festival continues to make a significant impact on the lives of local communities around the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and tourists alike.

Red Rocks Events
The Red Rocks Initiative for Sustainable Development arranges and hosts a number of events and activities throughout the year.
There are a variety of daily activities in Musanze and Nyakinama.
Every Saturday and Sunday, from 15h00 to 18h00 activities include traditional music and dance, local art and crafts, or cultural storytelling.
Annual events include the Red Rocks Talent Show (February), Cultural Festival (September) and the Conversation on Nature Conservation and Community Tourism (October).
Red Rocks Rwanda Eco Tours
Red Rocks Rwanda is both an Eco tours company and a social enterprise, bringing together community, wildlife, tourism and travel. Through our community-based cultural initiatives we actively promote sustainable tourism in Rwanda.
