Churches & Crypts of Cagliari

From the 5th century Paleochristian Basilica to the Baroque facades and altars of the 18th century, Cagliari’s ecclesiastical heritage is as rich as the city’s history. Here you will find a dense concentration of churches, visibly influenced by Byzantine, Pisan, Aragonese and Spanish rulers, and often built on Punic and Roman era structures then used as crypts. One way to visit the churches of Cagliari is to follow the Old Way of the Cross. Living for a long time in a place usually ends in two ways: you either love it or hate it. I love Cagliari. It is constantly ‘kissed’ by the sun as well as the wind. You can go to the beach until November. An there are many restaurants and shops. The Roman ruins, the medieval quarters, the Poetto seafront or the view from the Bastione are just a few of the places that make this city unique. Beginning your stay in Sardinia with Cagliari is a great way to start.

Plan Your Trip to Cagliari

Located in the south of the island on the Gulf of Cagliari, Cagliari is the largest city in Sardinia, and is the island’s capital. The port is one of the largest seaports in the Mediterranean, with commercial traffic, ferries to and from mainland Italy, as well as many passenger cruise ships. Although not the only international airport on the island, Cagliari Elmas Airport is the best connected. A ten minute train journey links the airport to the historic centre of the city, from where trains leave regularly to other cities on the island.
