Interactive Map of the Roman World
Although obviously a work in progress, we are making our interactive map of ancient Rome public so that our readers can share our progress. On 1 October 2024 we will be launching our Ancient Rome Newsletter. Not only will be updating subscribers of new content on Archaeology Travel relating to ancient Rome, we will also be sharing other news about temporary exhibitions, sites open to the public, books – in fact anything related to visiting the Roman world, either online or on site. The sign up for the newsletter is at the bottom of this page.
The Aim of Our Interactive Map
This map is part of our Guide to Exploring The Roman World. We are actively and daily adding more sites to our database for display on this map. Why not bookmark this page and follow our progress, or better yet, make sure we include your favourite places. Simply send us a message by opening the main menu (click the blue circle in the upper left hand corner of this page) and clicking on the envelope icon.
Our goal for this interactive map aligns with our mission – to help people engage more meaningfully with the world’s pasts. In this case the Roman past. You can do at least two things with this map.
First, you can use it to see street views of archaeological sites and landmarks, and in some cases even go inside the grounds. My favourite is the Colosseum in Rome. Start by locating a site to explore. You can do this either zooming in on the location and clicking on the markers – if you know where the site is on a map. Or by finding the site’s name in the legend below the map; click on the name and the information panel for that site will open on the map. Then switch the map to satellite mode (top left of the map), zoom in on the map (using the +/- button bottom right) and drag the yellow pegman (also bottom right) onto the map and drop it on to a light blue line (for street view) or dot (for a 360 degree panorama photograph). And away you go!
At the moment the Legend beneath the map is probably a bit unmanageable. You can use the filter to help search for sites by name. We are also working on another feature that will allow users to filter by site type – amphitheatres, theatres, bath houses, etc.
You can also use this map to create a personalised itinerary, as well as travel lists (bucket lists, places you have been to etc.). You can see how this is done by watching our Using the Itinerary video, or reading the Using the Itinerary page.
This map does work on mobile devices and tablets, but it is best used on a laptop or a desktop where there is a much bigger screen. To change the map to full screen, click on the toggle icon in the top right of the map (and press ESC to exit full screen).
