Desktop wall paper for February 2014

The February wallpaper for your desktop, laptop or mobile is taken from a rock art panel near Tanumshede in the Bohuslän region of Sweden.

Standing in front of the large panel of bronze age boats.

The Tanumshede area has many large outcrops of granite rock. At the end of the last Ice Age when the ice cap was receding northwards these outcrops of granite were scraped by glacial moraine, resulting in flat surfaces. And it is on these surfaces that Bronze Age communities engraved representations of humans, animals, weapons, boats and various geometric patterns. One of the most striking elements about these panels are the large depictions of boats; the largest of which are well over a metre in length.

Over a stretch of about 25 kilometres there are over 1,500 engraved panels, that collectively were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1994; 360 of which are in the Tanum area.

Many of these panels have been made accessible to the public. And a good place for visitors to the area to begin a tour of this amazing rock art tradition is at the Vitlycke Museum.

It is not too late for an Archaeology themed wall calendar for 2014
Archaeology photograph calendar for 2014 I have put together a selection of some of my favourite archaeological images for a high quality 2014 calendar. The cover photograph (seen here) is an image of what was one of the highlights of my finds on my archaeology travels in 2013, that is the painted pigeon from the Roman site of Jublains in north western France. Other photographs include megaliths from Brittany, Ramesses III’s memorial temple of Medinet Habu on the West Bank of Luxor in Egypt, and an archaeology site in all its autumnal glory. There are in total, including the photograph on the cover, thirteen different photographs. To take a look at the calendar without obligation to buy, and purchase one for yourself or a gift … click here.
