Tour Overview
Up against the cliffs overlooking the town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil is a somewhat brutish representation of a prehistoric man. Created by the French sculptor Paul Dardé and unveiled in 1931, ‘Primitive Man’ represents a Neanderthal not a Cro-Magnon individual, the first remains of which were found in a rock shelter a few hundred metres along the cliff-face. A kilometre or two in the other direction are Les Combarellles and Font de Gaume, two decorated caves discovered in 1902, the discovery of which lead to the acceptance of the prehistoric age of Franco-Cantabrian cave art. With the many archaeological investigations then and the founding of the National Museum of Prehistory in 1918, Les Eyzies soon became known as the ‘world capital of prehistory’, actively encouraging visitors to explore the many prehistoric sites in the area.
In four days, this small group tour will introduce you to the prehistory of the Vézère Valley. You will visit five of the finest decorated caves still accessible to the public as well as the replica of Lascaux (II or IV). Other archaeological sites will provide a broader context of the prehistoric peopling of this area. There is more, however, to the Vézère Valley and surrounding area than its prehistoric heritage. And other archaeological and historic sites are included on the itinerary introduce participants to the rich and varied history of the region.
For a taste of the rich Roman heritage, you will get to see the extraordinary presentation of the remains of a town house in what was then Vesunna, present-day Périgueux. Arranged around a central garden and richly decorated with frescoes, the residence with its hypocaust-heated rooms, a substantial kitchen, reception rooms, and baths bears testimony to the wealth of its inhabitants. Towards the end of the 3rd century AD Christianity swept through the area and Périgueux became an important religious centre in the Périgord region.
From the mid 9th century Viking raids significantly destabilised the region. in 976 AD the bishop of Périgueux had five defensive fortresses constructed to control access to the principal valleys. La Roque Saint Christophe in the Vézère Valley was one of these. Eighty metres above the Vézère River and stretching along the cliff face for about a kilometre, this is the largest so-called troglodyte site in Europe. The rock-cut fort remained in use for several decades, protecting communities during the many conflicts during the middle ages, including the Hundred Years’ War. Also included on the itinerary is a visit to Château de Beynac, a castle overlooking the Dordogne River and in French hands during the war. Besides its picturesque setting, the castle is known for its 15th century frescoes, including a local version of the Last Supper, in which Saint Martial, the first bishop of Limoges, is the maître d’hôtel.
Tour Leader - Thomas Dowson
Thomas Dowson has been visiting the decorated caves in Les Eyzies since 1989, including a number of stays in the Hotel Cro-Magnon. Over the decades since, he has led numerous trips with students, friends and guests, visiting the many Stone Age caves of France and Spain. Thomas trained as an archaeologist in South Africa, specialising in hunter-gatherer rock art. From there he moved to England, where he set up the world’s first instructional postgraduate degree in rock art studies. He was involved in pioneering research on the shamanistic interpretation of Franco-Cantabrian cave art (featured in the BBC’s Millennium series ApeMan). More recently he was the first to revive the concept of animism as a framework for understanding cave art (an approach now highlighted as a promising new avenue of enquiry in the audio presentation at Chauvet 2). As someone who is passionate about all periods of archaeology and travel, he founded this website, Archaeology Travel, in 2011 to share his experiences and expertise.Â

“I was talking about you today telling a friend what a great trip I had to France. Just wanted you to know again that it was truly memorable and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. Great memories and also for me exposure to history I knew little about. Thanks again sharing your knowledge and putting together a wonderful itinerary.”
Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive in Les Eyzies
Arrive in the World Capital of Pehistory, Les Eyzies, and check into Hotel Cro-Magnon (from 16h00 until 21h00). Why not arrive a bit earlier and take advantage of the extra time to visit France’s National Prehistory Museum. At 19h00, enjoy a welcome drink and a 3-course meal in the hotel, with an informal presentation on the prehistory and history of the area – setting the scene for the four days and spectacular sites that follow.Â
The following provides a general outline of the sites and museums you will visit on the tour. More detailed notes will be provided a month before the start of the tour.Â
Day 2
We start the tour with three of the best decorated caves in the immediate Les Eyzies area, Les Combarelles, Font de Gaume and Abri Cap Blanc. It was the discovery of two of these caves in 1901 (Les Combarelles and Font de Gaume) that lead French prehistorians to accept the prehistoric age of cave art. But these are not just historically significant sites, they are among the best decorated caves still open to the public in France today. These three show quite different types Ice Age art: painting, engraving and bas relief sculpture.Â
Free evening – stay in and eat in the hotel, or explore the many wonderful restaurants in Les Eyzies.
Day 3
Our first stop is Rouffignac Cave, with its hour-long electric train ride. From about 700 m to 1 km from the entrance, visitors get to see some of the finest images of mammoths. The cave is also known for its many traces of cave bears. From Rouffignac we head to Montignac to visit one of the two replicas of Lascaux. En route we will make a brief stop in the village of Le Moustier to have a quick look at the type-site of the Mousterian industry – stone tools made by Neanderthals. From there it is a short drive to one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère. Here we will have lunch on the banks of the river, at the superb Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe. The shop specialises in local produce and serves the best picnic lunches in the area. After lunch we visit Lascaux, and the nearby site of Regourdou. Excavated in 1957, Regourdou is known for its extremely well preserved Neanderthal skeleton from the Mousterian period – thought to be the oldest intentional Neanderthal burial from the Mousterian period.Â
Evening meal in the hotel.
Day 4
Having been to Regourdou, we start the day at the Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie du Périgord. On display in the museum is the much debated Neanderthal skeleton. Also in Périgueux, is the Roman town house built for an extremely wealthy family of Vesunna. On the way back to Les Eyzies we will stop at the so-called troglodyte settlement of Roque Saint Christophe.
Free evening – stay in and eat in the hotel, or explore the many wonderful restaurants in Les Eyzies.
Day 5
On our last day together we take in one last Ice Age cave, Cougnac. There are in fact two different caves to visit, the first is of geological interest only – with all sorts of stalactites and stalagmites to marvel at. The second, found in 1949, is known for its depictions of megaloceros – an extinct deer – among other interesting paintings. After lunch in the picturesque riverside town of La Roque Gageac, we head to Château de Beynac, in Beynac-et-Cazenac. This dramatic castle has been the set for many films, and the town was used for the river party scene in the film Chocolat.Â
A 3-course meal in the hotel ends our time together.
